We Energies to support Cutright, Quad 30 Campaign

Dr. Noel Cutright, We Energies senior terrestrial ecologist, doing what he loves -- watching birds.Through the Wisconsin Energy Corporation Foundation, We Energies is supporting Dr. Noel Cutright, senior terrestrial ecologist in Environmental, as he pursues a dream that many colleagues have told him is impossible. This June, Cutright will begin what he calls the "Quad 30 Campaign," a celebration of his more than 30-year involvement in running North American Breeding Bird Surveys (BBS) through which he will attempt to conduct 30 BBS routes during the 30 days of June and raise $30,000 for bird conservation.

A renowned ornithologist and president of the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology, Cutright leads We Energies' ecosystem management efforts to protect species on company-owned lands. These include several bird species, like the American blue bird, bald eagle, osprey and peregrine falcon. He hopes his campaign will raise awareness about the critical need to implement long-term programs to monitor bird populations. "Long-term monitoring studies are crucial to our understanding of wildlife population trends," said Cutright, "and we have none better than the North American Breeding Bird Survey."

Coordinated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the BBS program has been ongoing since 1966. Cutright has been surveying BBS routes since 1971.

For his Quad 30 Campaign, the USGS has assigned Cutright 30 BBS routes to survey in Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. To track Noel's progress, please visit www.quad30campaign.org. You also can listen to Noel discuss the campaign on Larry Meiller's Wisconsin Public Radio program, May 31, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. More>>
